HUMAN CENTERED DESIGN TRAINING COURSE

During 2009 to 2015, as a design strategist at Wireless Generation and Amplify Education, Takao developed a training program and implemented an ongoing training session for design thinking/human centered design method for technology driven company. One of the topic he used is redesigning yogurt experience. He had participants to eat yogurt, observe, generate insights, define opportunities, brainstorm solutions, prototype then test.

NYC PUBLIc
WORKSHOP for policy change action for high school Parents

NYCpublic.org is a nonprofit org dedicated to empower New York Citi's public school parents as they work to build expertise, share knowledge, and influence policy. NYCpublic.org team up with Takao Umehara, as an chief design strategist and Nelson Lo as design strategist to host three days intense workshop to enable parents, designers and engineers to create a tangible solution to support parents to accomplish their goal to effect changes in education context.

PLANNING THE WORKSHOP

The goal of the workshop design is the bring common language for all participants to collaborate to design the solution. Co-creation with NYCpublic.org executives enabled to generate workshop plan and frameworks which invites great solution by the participants.

We designed several thinking frameworks that allow workshop participants to generate ideas within designed framing that we prepare.

Based on many features we came up with, we created scenarios that describe a parent interacting with the digital tools.

Scenario helped to envision what type of digital tools can be created. Teams worked on turning scenario into features for digital tools.

We then created rough wireframes to put our idea together.

day 2: prototyping with code

Software Engineers join from day 2 and we started turning our wireframes into a live prototype.

When engineers are completed creating the live prototypes, each team tested prototypes of other teams and exchanged feedbacks. This process allowed each team to quickly learn which part of their assumption failed or worked.
